Barceló Hotel Group has strengthened its presence in Southeast Asia with the debut of Occidental Bangtao Beach Resort, a four-star beachfront property in Phuket that becomes the Spanish hospitality company’s second hotel in Thailand.

The opening marks another significant step in Barceló’s international expansion strategy, with Phuket emerging as an important base for its growth across Asia. The opening follows a management agreement announced earlier this year involving Arinara Beach Resort Phuket, with the property joining Barceló’s portfolio as Occidental Bangtao Beach Resort. As this Phuket Hotel News report details, the move expands the group’s footprint on the island following Barceló Coconut Island and underlines its growing confidence in Thailand’s international leisure market.
Prime Location on Bang Tao Beach
Located directly on Bang Tao Beach in Phuket’s popular Choeng Thale area, Occidental Bangtao Beach Resort combines beachfront access with facilities aimed at families, couples, groups, and leisure travelers.
The resort features 202 rooms and suites across 12 accommodation categories. One of its most distinctive features is its collection of 86 swim-up units, which provide guests with direct access from their terraces to the property’s extensive central swimming pool.
Some accommodations offer spaces of up to 50 square meters, giving families and multi-generational groups additional room during longer stays. The resort’s position also provides convenient access to the Andaman Sea and one of Phuket’s best-known stretches of coastline.

Dining and Beachfront Leisure
Food and beverage facilities form an important part of the revamped resort experience, with four different dining and social venues available to guests.
Among them is a Beach Club Restaurant & Bar featuring an Italian-Thai concept and designed as a beachfront gathering place for both hotel guests and outside visitors. The resort also offers a buffet restaurant, poolside snack bar, and seaside café with terrace and beach areas.
The combination reflects Barceló’s intention to position the resort as more than simply an accommodation property, creating leisure and dining experiences that can appeal to Phuket residents and other visitors to Bang Tao as well as overnight guests.
Family, Wellness, and Meeting Facilities
Beyond its beachfront location and extensive swimming facilities, Occidental Bangtao Beach Resort includes a kids’ club, gym, and a range of leisure and wellness options.
The property also targets Phuket’s meetings and events market. Four meeting rooms are available, including a main hall capable of accommodating more than 200 attendees, allowing the resort to serve corporate groups, private functions, and other organized events alongside its core vacation business.

This mixture of family facilities, leisure amenities, restaurants, and event spaces reflects Phuket’s increasingly diverse hospitality market, where resorts are competing for multiple traveler segments rather than relying solely on traditional beach vacations.
Thailand Takes Bigger Role in Barceló’s Asian Strategy
Barceló Hotel Group has identified Thailand as an important market within its broader Asian growth plans, supported by the country’s international air connectivity, established tourism infrastructure, and strong demand from overseas vacationers.
José Canals, Barceló Hotel Group’s chief operating officer for the Mediterranean, Middle East, and Asia, described the Phuket opening as another step in the company’s Asian strategy, pointing to the resort’s location, differentiated product, and comprehensive leisure offering.
The property is being operated under a management contract rather than through direct ownership. Such agreements allow Barceló to expand internationally by working with local property owners and partners while introducing the group’s brands, operating systems, and hospitality expertise.
Phuket Becomes a Platform for Further Growth
With Occidental Bangtao Beach Resort joining Barceló Coconut Island, the hotel group now has two properties in Phuket, giving the company a stronger foundation in one of Southeast Asia’s most internationally recognized resort destinations.
The opening also demonstrates how major international hotel operators continue to see long-term potential in Phuket. Barceló’s decision to expand through management partnerships could create further opportunities in Thailand and elsewhere in Asia, while its growing Phuket portfolio increases competition in an already dynamic resort market. For travelers, the arrival of another established international brand adds further choice across the island’s family, leisure, dining, and beachfront hospitality sectors.
