The mysterious death of a British tourist inside a hotel room in Phuket’s Patong district has sparked an ongoing police investigation, with forensic experts working to determine exactly what happened during the final hours of his holiday.

Police Rush to Patong Hotel After Body Discovered
Police from Patong Police Station were notified at approximately 11.20am on Monday, August 3, after hotel staff discovered the body of a foreign guest inside Room 1414 of a hotel in Patong, Kathu district. Investigating officers, forensic specialists and other relevant officials immediately travelled to the scene to secure the area and begin a comprehensive investigation into the unexplained death.
British Tourist Was Staying Alone in Phuket
The deceased was identified as Zakir Mahood, a 41-year-old British national who had been travelling alone in Phuket. Police confirmed that he had checked into the hotel on July 24 and was due to check out on August 3 after a planned 10-day stay.
According to investigators, Mr Mahood had not been seen by hotel staff for several days, although nothing initially appeared unusual because guests commonly request privacy during their stay.
Seven Day Do Not Disturb Sign Kept Staff Away
The hotel’s head housekeeper told investigators that Mr Mahood’s room was last serviced on July 27. Following that visit, the guest placed a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door. Respecting hotel policy and the guest’s privacy, housekeeping staff did not enter the room again during the following seven days.
The sign remained on the door throughout the remainder of his stay, with staff believing the guest simply wished not to be disturbed.
Checkout Day Ends in Tragedy
On the morning of August 3, the day Mr Mahood was due to leave the hotel, housekeeping staff followed normal checkout procedures by knocking on the room door shortly before 11am. After repeated knocks went unanswered, staff entered the room to determine whether the guest was inside.
They were confronted with the tragic discovery of Mr Mahood’s body and immediately contacted police. Emergency responders quickly arrived, secured the area and began documenting the scene.
Investigators Find No Evidence of Foul Play
Police officers and forensic specialists carried out a meticulous examination of the hotel room. Investigators reported that there were no signs of forced entry, no indication of a struggle and no evidence that the room had been disturbed or ransacked.
The condition of the room has so far provided no obvious indication that criminal activity was involved. However, officers stressed that the investigation remains open and that all possibilities will continue to be examined until forensic testing has been completed.
Autopsy Expected to Reveal Cause of Death
A preliminary examination conducted jointly by police investigators and forensic pathologist Dr Arthit Surawisakul suggested that Mr Mahood had died approximately 12 to 24 hours before his body was discovered.
Despite the initial findings, medical experts were unable to determine the exact cause of death during the examination at the hotel. Investigators have therefore ordered a full forensic autopsy at Vachira Phuket Hospital, where specialists will conduct a detailed post-mortem examination expected to establish both the medical cause and the manner of death.
British Embassy Coordinates with Family
Following the examination at the hotel, officers from the Phuket Charity Rescue Unit’s Patong branch transferred Mr Mahood’s body to Vachira Phuket Hospital for further forensic analysis.
Authorities are also working closely with the British Embassy, which is assisting with notifying Mr Mahood’s relatives and coordinating the necessary documentation for the eventual repatriation of his body to the United Kingdom for funeral arrangements.

Police have emphasized that there is currently no evidence pointing to foul play, violence or any criminal offence connected with the death. Nevertheless, investigators are continuing to gather evidence and review all available information until the forensic examination has been completed.
