According to this Phuket Hotels – Crime and Accidents news report, officers from Karon Police Station were alerted around 2.45pm after hotel staff received a distress call from a foreign guest who found the woman motionless. Responding officers arrived with forensic investigators and a doctor from Vachira Phuket Hospital to examine the scene.
Possible Drug and Alcohol Interaction
Police Lieutenant Phirawat Yodtor revealed that several items were collected as evidence, including prescription medications such as antidepressants, along with three opened cans of alcohol and two half-filled cocktail glasses. Preliminary assessments indicated that the woman had been dead for at least eight to ten hours before being found. Early forensic findings suggest that her death may have resulted from a reaction between medication and alcohol, possibly leading to respiratory failure.
A 49-year-old German man, believed to be a friend of the deceased, was questioned by police. He told investigators that the pair had spent the evening drinking at a local bar before returning to the hotel around 1am. He added that they had “a few more drinks” in the room before falling asleep, and that he discovered she was not breathing when staff knocked on the door around noon. Attempts by hotel staff to perform CPR were unsuccessful.
Police Investigations and Evidence Collection
The German companion underwent a full drug test and physical examination, both of which came back negative. CCTV footage from the hotel confirmed his statement, showing the two arriving together late at night and no other individuals entering the room afterward. Bar staff also corroborated the man’s account, stating there had been no arguments or suspicious activity before the pair left.
Investigators meticulously documented the scene, collecting photographic evidence and preparing a diagram of the room’s layout. The woman’s body was later transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital for a detailed autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Ongoing Investigation and Family Support
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of New Zealand confirmed that the country’s embassy in Bangkok is assisting the woman’s family. Police officials have stated that the case remains open pending toxicology results.
The case has once again drawn attention to the potential dangers of mixing prescription medication with alcohol, especially among tourists unaware of local conditions and health risks. Authorities are urging visitors to exercise caution and to seek immediate help if feeling unwell during their stay.
