Details of the Final Moments

According to this Phuket Hotels – Crime and Accidents news report, the tourist had stayed up late drinking beer and smoking on the hotel balcony while his wife went to bed around 9.30pm. She told officers she did not know when he eventually went to sleep. At about 5.30am she awoke to the sound of her husband coughing loudly. She tried giving him water as he appeared restless and started pacing the room before collapsing near the balcony door. She quickly alerted hotel staff who then contacted Karon Police Station.

Police Confirmation and Medical Background

Responding officers identified the man as 62-year-old Austrian national Andreas Nemec. His wife, 62-year-old Hildegard Unterwieser, confirmed that he had a long history of high blood pressure and had been taking medication for more than a decade. A forensic team led by Pol Lt Col Surasak Sudmuang and Dr Athit Suravisankul of Vachira Phuket Hospital examined the scene and confirmed there were no indications of foul play, no signs of struggle and nothing suspicious in the room.

Ongoing Procedures and Final Steps

Police concluded the on-site investigation at about 11.30am before transporting Nemec’s body to Vachira Phuket Hospital for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Officials have stated that investigations will continue in accordance with standard procedures, particularly when foreign nationals are involved. The incident has added to ongoing concerns about visitor safety and the importance of proper medical awareness among travelers, especially those with pre-existing health conditions. Events like this underline how quickly medical emergencies can unfold during holidays abroad and why immediate response and proper documentation remain crucial for families and authorities alike.
